UL LISTED – What does that mean?

signarama louisville east UL listedUL – it’s the symbol that just about every consumer recognizes. It is found in so many products we keep around our homes and workplaces. Besides the impression that the item you are about to purchase is safe for use – what does UL listed actually mean?

History of UL:

“UL” is short for Underwriters Laboratories, an organization that has been testing and approving products for consumer safety since 1894. Originally known as the Underwriters Electrical Bureau, UL was founded in Chicago by William Merrill, and has since expanded to include 182 service centers in more than 70 countries. Underwriters Laboratories performs safety testing on 18,750 categories of electrical, mechanical and chemical products!

Why is a UL Listing so important?

Underwriters Laboratories is a third-party, not-for-profit organization with no financial interest in the products they evaluate. Consumers can be confident that their seal of approval is not a superficial sales ploy but a true indication of an item’s operational safety.

Manufacturers even receive unannounced visits from UL representatives, who evaluate already-listed products to determine whether or not the safety standards are being maintained. If not – the UL listing is taken away.

UL Listing with Signs

At Signarama Louisville East – we have gone the extra mile to ensure that our safety standards are up to par. We are one of the few UL Listed sign companies and are able to manufacture and ship wholesale signs across state lines because of it. Not only that – but some shopping centers are required to only maintain UL listed signage for building safety purposes.

You will find a UL sticker on all of our lit signage including our channel letters, light box cabinet signs, monuments and more. For additional information on our lit signage or to schedule a site survey – contact us!
